2 December 2009: Leading electrical and instrumentation contractor, Southern Cross Electrical Engineering (“SCEE”) is pleased to announce that it has won two national awards at the 2009 National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA) Excellence Awards, held on 26 November 2009 in Melbourne.
SCEE won the Industrial Project Excellence Award and the Occupational Health & Safety (“OH&S”) Excellence Award for its Electrical and Installation works associated with the upgrade of Rio Tinto’s 80Mtpa Cape Lambert iron ore project. SCEE was also recognised by NECA’s Western Australian branch in July 2009 where it received the state level excellence awards for the same categories.

On the Cape Lambert project SCEE had more than 110 employees and 13 subcontractors who completed more than 260,000 man hours. The team was the only electrical contractor on the project and upgraded all electrical plant and equipment at over 70 facilities across the site. The project was completed on time and without a lost time injury.

SCEE’s Managing Director Stephen Pearce said the company was delighted to be recognised for its performance on this project. “For over thirty years SCEE’s values have been centred on working with its clients and EPCMs to assist in delivering first ore. SCEE is very proud that the industry has again recognised the achievement of these values with the OH&S Excellence and Industrial Project Excellence awards.

“Whilst it was the Cape Lambert project that was officially recognised, SCEE has an excellent track record of successfully completing projects both in Australia and international locations like South America and Africa for blue chip customers such as BHP Billiton, Barrick Gold, Newmont and Goldfields. As a consequence of its excellent project delivery, SCEE is continually undertaking work for repeat clients.

“On every project our first priority is to put in place a safety management plan which addresses everything from hazard identification and control, right through to prevention techniques and safety performance monitoring. This discipline has resulted in achieving over four years without a lost time injury.”

In addition to the NECA awards, SCEE was awarded Safety Contractor of the Month six out of the ten times for its work on the Cape Lambert project, the highest of any contractor on site.
