Rio Tinto are expanding pit operations with the Oxbow Project to sustain production from Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s Yandi mine operations. The planned Oxbow pit is to span both sides of BHPBIO's rail link between Mining Area C and BHPBIO Yandi mine. As a result the Oxbow project includes the construction a haul road crossing (overpass) over BHPBIO's rail.

At the selected haul road crossing location, the BHPBIO Newman - Yandi 132kV transmission line crosses above BHPBIO's rail and just to the south of it, the Rio Tinto Hamersley & Robe River Rail originating from Yandicoogina crosses under the BHPBIO rail. As part of the enabling works for the Oxbow Project, three spans (approx. 400m) of the transmission line require an increase to the conductor ground clearance as well as a change in the route of the transmission line in order that it crosses BHPBIO's rail to the north of the haul road crossing. Within the three spans of the transmission line to be adjusted, both the BHPBIO and Rio Tinto railways are crossed.
The relocation of the transmission line by SCEE was split into three phases -
- Pre-shutdown - included the construction of access tracks, pole foundations, erection of the poles and completion of one intermediate span between the new poles;
- Shutdown - included the transfer of conductors from the old towers to the new poles as well as completion of the second intermediate span which crossed BHPBIO rail;
- Post shutdown -the demolition and disposal of the two redundant towers.
During the performance of the work SCEE liaised closely with the following stakeholders-
- BHPBIO Non Process Infrastructure department who manage and maintain the 132kV transmission line asset
- BHPBIO Rail Operations to gain possession of the rail to string the line
- BHPBIO Asset Projects
- Rio Tinto and its contractors constructing haul roads within the area of works
- Rio Tinto Rail Operations to gain possession of the rail to string the line
